Is it legal for my employer to tell me when to take my vacation time?

Yes. It is legal for your employer to tell you when to take your vacation time and for how long at a time. Employers have this right because in order to manage a business efficiently, vacation periods have to be planned out carefully. You would not have any grounds to file a vacation wage claim in California against your employer for telling you when to take your vacation.

Example:

Joe earns 2 weeks of vacation time each year. Joe’s employer tells Joe to take his vacation in May. Joe’s employer has the right to tell Joe when to take his break in order to operate his business smoothly. Joe would have no grounds to file a vacation wage claim in California.
